Sly woke up with a pounding headache.

It had been years since they’d been this bad. Of course, it made sense he’d have one now. Ever since his late teens, Sly suffered from debilitating tension headaches brought on by stress. Back then, it had been homework and tests. Later, it was life as a Marine. When an extra strength ibuprofen couldn’t cut through the pain any longer, he had to learn another way to deal. Staying cool, not letting anything get to him… it helped him keep the headaches back.

And then he met Maria. A sweet soul with a kind heart and a soft touch, just knowing she was his was enough for him to ride the few headaches he’d had since he met her. Shortly following Caitlin De Angelis’s murder, the weeks between Mason Walsh’s arrest and Sly taking over as sheriff, had been the worst of it, especially since Maria was still attempting to keep their relationship hidden from her brother. Since then, though, he’d had maybe two or three.

This was his fourth this week. It didn’t take a genius to figure out why, either.

Véronique.

Sly reached blindly behind him, grabbing one of the two pillows on his bed before covering his face. He didn’t scream into it, though he almost wanted to, instead using the pillow to block out some of the light shining in from his bedroom window.

How late was it? He had a tendency to sleep in on his off day, cozying up to Maria and marveling over his good luck. But Maria wasn’t in his bed, the sun was super fucking bright, and Sly wished it was next week already.

Nope. It was only Friday. Véronique whirled into Hamlet on Monday. Today was day five. Two more to go and things could finally get back to normal.

He couldn’t wait.

Being around his ex was winding him up so tightly, it was no wonder he was suffering from his stress headaches. If it wasn’t for Maria asking him sweetly to keep Véronique company, maybe show her around Hamlet and make her feel welcome, Sly would’ve been happy to point her way past the gulley himself, smiling as he saw the back of that flashy Corvette.

What he wasn’t happy about since she was still hanging around? The way she wanted nothing more than to rehash the past—except, perhaps, for reliving it.

Hell, no.

It was over. Done with. The puppy love they once shared seemed ridiculous in comparison to the feelings he had for Maria. One was like a spark, the other a blazing conflagration. And, no matter how sneakily Véronique tried to rekindle their high school relationship, Sly wanted nothing to do with it—or her.

But she tried. Damn if she didn’t.

He didn’t want to involve Maria, though. He knew how much the success of Ophelia meant to her and he never wanted to put her in the position of having to choose him or her career. She supported him as sheriff, even though he knew she worried about his safety constantly.
